Week 6

Time is flying! I've already reached week 6 of college! Anyway, this week was a bit more refreshing. Haha. Highlights of the week - Cancellation of a 9 am class (YAY! SLEEP!) and a class trip!

So, for visual arts, as a class, we had to visit the Singapore Art Museum.

Museums, according to me, are not that fun, but not having to sit through a class is a big win!! We had to go to a particular exhibition called ‘After Utopia’, and take 15 second videos there to post onto instagram.

Here are a few pictures from our trip!

Oh! Another really cool thing that happened this week is that I’ve been accepted for the student assistantship in college! Yes, that means additional work, but the fact that I will be earning my own money just feels amazing! Like I’ve said before, it’s that feeling of independence and assurance that I can fend for myself that is amazing.

Leaving all this aside, the weekly stack of assignments for each class is very much there….waiting for me.

3D models that I still have to complete! x|

This is the only thing I’m not too fond about doing - At the end of each week, by Sunday, I would have completed all of my work….but then the new week starts, and we get issued a big load all over again. It’s a never ending process.

Anyway…come back next week for my next college update :) See you soon!

Week 5

So as the weeks go by, work piles on, days go by, the show goes on.
It’s the same routine, day in, day out - wake up, go to college, work, pass out.
And even that little free time, gets hogged by those assignments of mine.
What’s happened to me, I’ve become a machine, that blindly follows a strict routine.
The worst part is, being in zombie mode, you don’t see the good things you’ve been bestowed.
So take a minute and pause the work you’re doing, and go catch up on all the fun you’ve been losing.
That’s what I did, that’s right, I paused, and caught a few good memories before they got lost.

Week 4

Something I've learned recently is independence. Living away from home, in a new country, on a budget and fending for myself is a completely new life. In India, I lived in a bubble. Here, I'm all on my own. From paying bills and trying to make some money here and there to taking care of myself when sick, I've completely burst that old bubble of mine. I've never felt more confident and independent before. I guess that's what college life, and living away from home does to you...and that's AMAZING. This is a brilliant experience, and so far, I'm having a blast :D

Leaving that aside and getting back to my weekly college update: In creative thinking, our exercise was 'Mind mapping'. So, from our '101 ways to kill a cockroach' assignment from last week, we created a mind map.

Last week's assignment

Mind Map

Moving on to Visual Arts, our assignment was to take photographs (with our respective groups in the picture), which represented the important aspects of this era. These are the photos my group took:

 Technology

 Curtailed Freedom

Industrialisation

Our 3D fundamentals class is a bit challenging. Our assignment is to create a wire sculpture that represents movement. We are supposed to use only 3 wires. This is my prototype:

Finally, in Drawing Fundamentals, this week's work was shading and bringing out a 3 dimensional form. Here is some of my work.

Anyway, that's all the updates for this week! Come back for more next week :)

Week 3

Hello! Welcome back to my blog!

As for my weekly college update, this week was pretty interesting. I’ve had to make powerpoint presentations, sketch and….come up with 101 ways to…..KILL A COCKROACH! I’d have to say the last one was the most fun to do! This assignment was for my creative thinking class. It didn’t have to be logical or realistic, we just had to use our creative side and go wild! My group and I doodled on a ‘Mahjong Paper’, which is basically just a big piece of paper, for the assignment. Here is how it turned out:

It was in another class called 2D fundamentals, where I had to make a powerpoint presentation. My group’s topic was ‘Colours used in playgrounds and preschools’. We have to present it to the class next week. What got me really excited though, was that my teacher approved of my drawing assignment! The object was to simplify a picture and fill it in with only lines and shapes. This is how it looked before making some final touches.

Moving on to my drawing fundamentals class…our week’s assignment was to just sketch using cross and hatch technique. I had to tediously and quickly create 9 sketches! Here are a few!

Hehe, my classmate Ju roughly sketched me!

Anyway, that's pretty much what I did this week. Come back here next week for my next college update :] See you!

Week 2

Hi! Welcome to my blog! My blog as of now is college related, so if you read my posts and ever wonder why there’s a lot of random ones, that should explain it! So a little about me, I’m a freshman at NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts), love art, dogs and music! I have a really small youtube channel right now as well - Samara Rage, where I do covers of songs. The link should be there on my blog if you’re interested. In my blog you will be hearing all about my college life, (I’ve taken the ‘Object and Jewellery’ course in 3D design)!

As a design student, I’ve had to do a bit of research on a particular designer who “breaks the rules” in his designs. A designer who questions the standard design of products and changes them. For example, a chair's standard design has four legs for structure, a back rest and a piece to sit on. That's a chair's basic "rule". These designers will think on the lines of, "Why does the chair need four legs? Why can't it have say one leg which does the same job as four"? Such a designer is Peter Bristol. Peter is an Industrial Designer. He helps lead the industrial design at Carbon Design Group, and has his own company as well. He focuses mainly on furniture and lighting. Here are a few of his designs where he has "broken rules":

Clothes Drawers:
The standard design has rectangular or square drawers, Peter has broken the rules by changing the design of them.

Cut Chair:
Standard chairs have four legs connected to the chair, however, this chair has three cut legs and only one that seems to be properly connected to the chair.

Box Light:

Corner Lamp:
Normally, lamps or lights are on the walls or on the ceilings. Peter has created one which fits into the corner of a room without any stand.

Modified Keyboard:
